Nearly a century ago, freedom leader Lala Lajpat Rai transformed personal grief into a gift for humanity. In 1927, he founded the Gulab Devi Trust in memory of his mother, who lost her life to tuberculosis.
By 1934, the hospital opened its doors as a sanctuary for tuberculosis patients, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey of compassion and service. In the early days of independence, when trains carrying wounded and exhausted migrants arrived at Walton Station, many of the most severely injured were brought to Gulab Devi Hospital for care, relief, and refuge.
Amidst this immense human suffering, on 6th November 1947, our institution received one of its greatest honors: the Father of the Nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and Fatima Jinnah, visited the hospital to personally inquire about the condition of the migrants. During this visit, Quaid-e-Azam penned a few heartfelt words on a piece of paper, words that have since become one of the most treasured parts of our heritage:
From these humble beginnings, the hospital’s spirit of service grew stronger with each generation, guided by visionary leaders such as Begum Raana Liaquat Ali Khan, Syed Wajid Ali and Syed Shahid Ali, who dedicated their lives to expanding its mission.
What started as a modest 50-bed facility has now grown into South Asia’s largest chest and cardiac hospital, with 1,500 beds and a wide-ranging network of over 25 specialized departments. Every day, thousands of patients, many underprivileged, receive free or subsidized treatment. All this made possible by the help of Allah and countless donors and philanthropists.
It is this unwavering support that has transformed Gulab Devi into more than just a hospital. It is now a complete healthcare and an educational ecosystem. Home to Al Aleem Medical College and the Gulab Devi Educational Complex (GDEC), the institution trains future doctors and healthcare professionals in an environment rooted in empathy, excellence, and service.
From its origins in compassion to its present status as a center of excellence across over 25 departments, Gulab Devi Teaching Hospital stands as a living testament to what humanity can achieve when hearts unite for a higher purpose.
