Introduction

Khalida Rashid Institute of Mental Health is a specialized psychiatric unit designed to provide comprehensive care and treatment for individuals experiencing acute mental health crises or severe psychiatric symptoms. It was inaugurated on 6 September 2021 by Dr. Mowaddat Hussain Rana, a renowned psychiatrist of Pakistan. The building was constructed and donated by Dr. Abdur Rasheed Chaudry, who named it after his late wife. Led by Professor Dr. Muhammad Mujtaba, our fully functional Psychiatry Ward is dedicated to providing comprehensive mental health care in a safe and supportive environment.

The ward is equipped with 20 indoor beds—10 designated for male patients and 10 for female patients—ensuring privacy and individualized care. We offer a safe and supportive environment led by a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, nurses, therapists and other healthcare professionals. Equipped to address a range of mental health conditions like mood disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders and various personality disorders, our department provides intensive therapy, medication management and stabilization, aiming to empower patients to manage their symptoms and the transition back to everyday life. We conduct a daily outpatient department (OPD) service that caters to 20–30 patients, offering timely psychiatric consultations and follow-up care.

Our team includes a qualified clinical psychologist who provides psychological evaluations and therapy tailored to each patient’s needs. With a 24/7 staff availability, we ensure continuous monitoring, compassionate care, and prompt response to patient needs, day and night. Our goal is to promote recovery, resilience, and holistic well-being for every individual we serve. The department also undertakes the teaching of behavioral sciences and psychiatry to students of Al-Aleem Medical College and the Institute of Allied Health Sciences associated with Gulab Devi Educational Complex. The department has teaching rooms allocated for students, male and female wards where students are taught at the bedside during their clinical rotations and a fully functional library. The department has two consultant psychiatrists, eight postgraduate trainees in the field of psychiatry and a clinical psychologist who are involved in teaching medical students in the ward as well as lectures.
