Introduction

The Department of Anesthesia is a well-established and well-equipped one. It is as old as the Department of Thoracic Surgery and was properly established in 1980. Dr. Ghazanfer Sukhaira was the first regular anaesthetist in Gulab Devi Chest Hospital. Prof. Dr. Shafiq ud Din was a visiting anesthetist from Mayo Hospital, Lahore during 1970-1980. After the retirement of Dr. Ghazanfer Sukhaira, Dr. Zubair Ahmed Qureshi took charge of the department. From 2019-2024, Prof. Syed Zia Haider commenced the residency program of postgraduation in anesthesia, and Dr. Taqi served as Assistant Professor till March 2025. Currently, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abdul Aziz is serving as the Head of Department.

Our Anesthesia Department is capable of producing competent and capable anesthetists, who can serve and perform anywhere independently within the country as well as out of the country. The basic purpose and aim of the Anesthesia Department is to improve the skills of anesthetists in a desired way so that he/she can compete with anesthetists anywhere within the country or throughout the world.

To create an environment of mutual respect and trust in the department so that our patients get maximum care and trainees excel within available resources.

Vision

Ours is a relatively young facility; however, it will be our utmost wish to establish it such that clinical work is done with safety and up-to-the-mark training is extended for future specialists in the field of anesthesia and intensive care.

Future Opportunities

Computerized Record Keeping

  • Implementing digital systems for patient records and data management.

Postoperative Pain Management

  • Focus on effective analgesia techniques for pain control after surgery.

Anesthesia Management

  • Managing critical patients with various types of peripheral nerve blocks.

Difficult Intubation

  • Introducing fiberoptic bronchoscope for challenging intubations (currently in process).

Upgrading Equipment

  • Continuous enhancement of equipment in operating rooms (ORs) and the ICU for better care and treatment.

Departmental Goals

  • Patient safety is our top priority.
  • Use of ultrasound for carrying out realtime image guided procedures for patient’s safety.
  • To develop state of the art ICU providing all modern facilities for critical patients needing mechanical ventilation.
  • Learning new innovations in academics for the postgraduate residents and improvement in the training program.
  • Conduct of clinical workshops on BLS, ACLS, difficult airway algorithm, ultrasound and mechanical ventilator handling.
