Introduction

The Department of Rheumatology at Al-Aleem Medical College was founded in 2022 in response to the growing need for specialized care for patients with autoimmune and musculoskeletal disorders. As one of the emerging departments within the medical college and affiliated teaching hospital, it plays a vital role in both clinical services and academic training.

The core functions of the department include:

Clinical Care

  • The department provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for a wide spectrum of rheumatic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, vasculitis, spondyloarthropathies, and crystal arthropathies.

Medical Education

  • Actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, the department trains medical students, house officers, and postgraduates in the principles and practices of rheumatology.

Ultrasound Integration

  • One of the few rheumatology departments in the region to adopt musculoskeletal ultrasound as a routine clinical tool for diagnosis and monitoring of inflammatory arthritis.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

  • The department works closely with nephrology, dermatology, orthopedics, and radiology teams for comprehensive patient care.

Achievements & Milestones

  • Successfully organized and participated in national conferences such as the Pakistan Society for Rheumatology Annual Meetings.
  • Pioneered the use of ultrasound-guided joint assessments and injections within the teaching hospital.
  • Conducted workshops on immunopathogenesis of autoimmune diseases and ultrasound-guided procedures for junior doctors.
  • Published multiple research papers in local and international journals on topics like remission in rheumatoid arthritis and ultrasound assessment.
