A Primary Surgical Skills Workshop was successfully conducted at the Skills Lab of Al Aleem Medical College, Lahore on 25th March 2026 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon. The workshop aimed to enhance the basic surgical competencies of trainees and students through a combination of state-of-the-art lectures and hands-on practical training.
The event was graced by Prof Ghulam Mustafa Arain, Dean Academics CPSP, as the Chief Guest. In his address, he highlighted the importance of structured surgical training and the role of simulation-based learning in developing safe and competent surgeons.
“Early exposure to basic surgical skills in a structured learning environment is essential for developing competent surgeons and ensuring patient safety. Workshops like this bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.”
The workshop was organized under the leadership of Prof Masood Rashid, Head of the Department of General Surgery, who served as the Chief Organizer. He emphasized the importance of practical skill acquisition alongside academic learning.
The training sessions were conducted by a distinguished panel of Master Trainers including Prof Khalil Ahmed, Prof Usman Ali Rahman, Prof Iftikhar Ahmed, Dr Qaim Deen, Dr Maliha Javed Butt, and Dr Salman Majeed. They were assisted by Senior Registrars Dr Asad, Dr Saad, and Dr Hunza, who facilitated the practical sessions and guided participants during the hands-on training.
A total of 125 participants attended the workshop, including Postgraduate Residents, House Officers, Final Year MBBS students, and Final Year B.Sc Operation Theater Technology students.
The workshop included interactive lectures followed by hands-on training on essential surgical skills including aseptic techniques, donning and doffing of surgical gowns, gloving techniques, sutures and suturing techniques, surgical knotting methods, biopsy procedures, and introduction to basic laparoscopic skills.
Participants were provided the opportunity to practice these skills under the direct supervision of experienced faculty members, enabling them to improve their technical competence and confidence.
The workshop concluded successfully with enthusiastic participation and positive feedback from attendees. Such training initiatives significantly contribute to strengthening surgical education and promoting skill-based learning among future surgeons and healthcare professionals.
